As the spring slowly feels like summer, we head towards the holiday season – a time of year that brings many celebrations and much joy.

However, with our daily schedules filling up and our offices and households buying many more chocolates and sweets, it’s a difficult time of year to look after our health and wellbeing. To help you stay on track this holiday season, here are a few quick tips.

Start with a healthy breakfast

Eating a healthy breakfast is an important goal to set and achieve. Recent studies have found that people who didn’t eat breakfast had a higher Body Mass Index (BMI) than those including breakfast into their daily routine.

Eating a healthy breakfast increases your ability to achieve and maintain a desired body weight. Studies have found, those eating a healthy breakfast have a lower risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes and obesity.

Furthering this, eating a healthy breakfast is associated with the consumption of healthier foods throughout the rest of the day, however, with all the chocolates and sweets around this time of year, it can still be a challenge.

So how can we avoid eating these unhealthy foods?

To avoid these unhealthy foods, the solution is that you must become mindful of what you eat. Being mindful of your social surroundings, your current mood and the portion or serve size of the foods you eat can improve eating habits by making better snack choices, reducing calorie intake and reducing impulsive eating. Therefore, the result of being mindful is a healthier weight as well as overall improved eating habits.

Include foods that keep you fuller for longer

Finally, along with eating a healthy breakfast and being mindful about your food choices, try to include foods into your diet that keep you fuller for longer. Foods that are high in fibre and foods containing protein are great choices to reduce those hunger pains, so why not prepare a salad for a starter or try adding nuts and seeds, tuna, tofu, egg or even chicken breast to your meal.

So remember, this holiday season…

Be sure to eat a healthy breakfast, be mindful about your food choices and include foods into your diet that will keep you fuller for longer. This will enable you to further maintain health and wellbeing whilst enjoying the many celebrations and wonderful times the end of the year brings.
